Birbeck, University of London is established in 1823 as the London Mechanics’ Institute by its founder, Sir George Birkbeck, and its supporters, Jeremy Bentham, J. C. Hobhouse and Henry Brougham. Birkbeck is one of the few universities to specialise in evening higher education in the United Kingdom. Birkbeck graduates’ salaries are among the highest in the UK, five years after graduation.
The 2021 QS World University Rankings, regarded as one of the world’s most consulted sources of comparative data for university performance, has ranked Birkbeck in the top 40 UK universities from those evaluated.
